Lecture on the IAEA POL9028 project during the 18th Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics (PTFM) – report

During the 18th Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics (PTFM), on September 20, 2024, Dariusz Kluszczyński, Director of the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care gave a lecture entitled “IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme for 2024-2025 – Project POL9028”. The presentation concerned the description of the project, assumed goals, discussion of activities, budget of the project and cooperation with organizations such as PTFM.

Project IAEA TC POL9028: “Preventing tissue reactions in interventional procedures”  is implemented by the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care as part of the Technical Cooperation Programme of the International Atomic Energy Agency for 2024-2025 (IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme 2024-2025) and aims to raise awareness among personnel involved in IR by promoting procedures where the patient’s radiation protection is part of good medical practice.

The 18th Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics (PTFM) took place in Poznań, on September 19-21, 2024, under the slogan: “Medical physicist. Redefinition of the concept. Are we sure?”. This is a key event for people associated with the Society, and is organized every two years in cooperation with the best national clinical and scientific centers, and this year it was held under the honorary patronage of the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care. The aim of the Congress was, among others, to present the latest knowledge and achievements and to exchange experiences regarding the development of medical physics, in particular new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The topics covered issues in the field of radiotherapy, medical imaging, nuclear medicine, radiation protection, theranostics, biosignals and nanotechnology. The event gathered 240 participants.

EU publication “Medical Applications of Ionising Radiation for Better Patients’ Lives: a European Research Roadmap”

The European Union has published the Medical Applications of Ionising Radiation for Better Patients’ Lives: a European Research Roadmap, a major outcome of the Euratom Horizon 2020 EURAMED rocc-n-roll project that also builds on the challenges and research needs identified in its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA).

Based on a patient-centric approach, the roadmap presents 8 potential breakthroughs that may significantly impact medical applications of ionising radiation in relation to patients’ life expectancy and quality of life, radiation protection and healthcare systems.

The vision of this roadmap is to provide guidance to European policymakers, funders, and the scientific and clinical communities regarding priority research, infrastructure development, and education and training actions related to medical applications of ionising radiation.

The publication is available on the EU website: Medical applications of ionising radiation for better patients’ lives – Publications Office of the EU (europa.eu)

Project POL9027 session during the XVIII Congress of the Polish Society of Nuclear Medicine

The XVIII Congress of the Polish Society of Nuclear Medicine “Nuclear medicine – clinical impact” was held in Poznań on June 6-8, 2024. The event was attended by 342 participants. The program of the congress included 28 scientific sessions, among them the session on the POL9027 project under the auspices of the IAEA, on June 6. The session was moderated by Dariusz Kluszczyński, DSc, Eng, Director of the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care, together with Agata Pietrzak, MD, from the Greater Poland Cancer Centre. During this session, participants had the opportunity to listen to lectures by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency: Enhancing Quantitative Accuracy in PET/CT Imaging” by prof. John Dickson (Institute of Nuclear Medicine University College London Hospital, United Kingdom); “Ethics for radiation protection” by Steve Ebdon-Jackson (Consulting Physicist, United Kingdom); “The future direction of women in nuclear medicine and nuclear medicine in women’s health” by prof. Laura Evangelista (Humanitas University, Milan, Italy).

IAEA experts also gave lectures in other sessions during the congress: “PSMA PET/CT in the light of recent research” – Laura Evangelista (June 7, session Oncology); “Unintended and unexpected exposures in nuclear medicine” – Steve Ebdon-Jackson (June 7, session Technology and radiation protection); “Optimisation and quantification of brain imaging” – John Dickson (June 7, session Meet the Expert); “Emerging Trends in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics” – John Dickson (June 8, closing session of the congress).

Project IAEA TC POL9027 “Enhancing the Capabilities of Positron Emission Tomography Departments to Provide High Quality Imaging and Therapies to Promote Safety Culture” is implemented by the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care as part of the International Atomic Energy Agency Technical Cooperation Program for 2022-2024, and aims to provide nuclear medicine departments using PET merit support in the field of quality assurance / control (QA / QC), providing specialized measuring equipment to those departments, assuring an appropriate practical training and promoting good practice in the field of patient and staff safety. A symposium summarizing the project will be held in 2024. We invite you to follow Project IAEA TC POL9027 tab on our website!
