Patient Radiation Protection Training 

The obligation for improving patient radiation protection-related qualifications of employees performing diagnostic examinations, procedures and treatment involving ionising radiation and of their supervisors is laid down
in Article 33n (1) of the Act – Atomic Law (consolidated text, Dz. U. of 2021, item 1941).

To comply with the obligation of improving patient radiation protection-related qualifications, persons subject to this obligation are obliged to obtain at least 20 credits within the next 5 years (following the date of entry into force of the amendments of 13 June 2019, i.e. as of 23 September 2019) – Article 33n (2).

The obligation of improving patient radiation protection-related qualifications can be fulfilled through one of the following ways, laid down in the Act – Atomic Law (Article 33n (3), points 1-4):

  1. Completion of a patient radiation protection training course concluded with an internal examination, and obtaining certificate confirming completion of the training course and passing the examination, or
  2. Completion of a training course other than the course specified in point 1, which covers radiation protection, safe application of ionising radiation for medical purposes, medical application of ionising radiation or methods and procedures for testing technical parameters of radiology equipment, and obtaining certificate confirming completion of each of these courses, or
  3. Participation in national or international scientific congresses, conventions, conferences or symposia on the topics referred to in point 2.

Pursuant to Article 33n (4), each of the above-mentioned forms of radiation protection qualification has been assigned a specific value of credits:

  • For completion of the patient radiation protection training course (Article 33n (4)(1)): 20 credits,
  • For each hour of any other training course in the specific topic
    (Article 33n (4)(2): 1 credit,
  • For participation in national or international scientific congresses, conventions, conferences or symposia on the specific topic
    (Article 33n (4)(3)): 5 credits,
  • For delivering a lecture or speech at a scientific congress, convention, conference or symposium on a specific topic
    (Article 33n (4)(4)): 10 credits.

Patient radiation protection training course (Article 33n (3)(1) of the Act – Atomic Law):

  • Is one of several ways of improving patient radiation protection-related qualifications
  • Is completed with an internal examination
