Krajowe centrum ochrony radiologicznej w ochronie zdrowia

The National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care has prepared a Polish-language version of the WHO publication entitled „Communication about radiation risks in pediatric imaging: Information to facilitate discussions between specialists and patients about the benefits and risks.”

The guide discusses the following topics:

  • types of radiation and sources of exposure to children in medicine, including radiation doses used and known potential health risks;
  • basic principles of radiation protection, methods of implementation, and key elements that support the development of a radiation safety culture in the health care system;
  • methods of discussing the risks and benefits of imaging examinations, adapted to the specific nature of different clinical situations;
  • practical advice to support communication with patients, as well as examples of frequently asked questions with answers, which can be used as a basis for creating educational materials for patients and their relatives;
  • ethical aspects of communicating the risks of paediatric imaging procedures.

The guide is primarily intended for referring physicians and staff carrying out procedures involving radiation exposure. It can also serve as a basis for further publications addressed to patients, their caregivers, family members, and the broader public.

In addition to the guide, the WHO has prepared leaflets and posters on different types of procedures involving ionizing radiation, which are aimed at patients and their caregivers.
