“Strengthening the Role of Radiation Protection Optimization in Interventional Radiology Practices”

(Polish title: „Wzmocnienie roli optymalizacji ochrony radiologicznej w praktyce radiologii zabiegowej”)

Project Description:

The project is conducted by the National Centre for Radiation Protection in Health Care (NCRPHC) within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency Technical Cooperation Programme (IAEA TC) for 2026–2027. This is the second initiative implemented together with the IAEA focused on interventional radiology (IR). The first project – POL9028 – was focused on building general competencies in the safe use of ionising radiation during IR procedures. The primary objective of POL9029 is to provide practical training for IR specialists, aimed at expanding their knowledge, skills, and qualifications so that radiation protection for both patients and staff become an integral part of good medical practice.

All hospitals performing IR procedures are invited to participate in the project. At the current stage, four centres have declared their cooperation in the implementation of the project:

• the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration in Warsaw,
• the Upper Silesian Medical Centre of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice,
• the Provincial Multi-Specialist Centre for Oncology and Traumatology in Lodz,
• the Provincial Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszow.

The activities planned within POL9029 include, among others:

• IAEA expert missions in four institutions participating in the project,
• an opening meeting for the project, to which IAEA experts, stakeholders, and representatives of partner institutions will be invited; during the meeting, challenges related to radiation protection in IR procedures will be presented, and issues related to the project implementation plan will be discussed,
• scientific visits to leading interventional radiology centres,
• workshops on the optimisation of radiation protection,
• a survey on patient doses in interventional radiology,
• training in radiation protection in IR at the Simulation Centre established at NCRPHC.
